Community Class: Yin with Annabell Ramirez

We are happy to be offering our second Community Yin Class at Elevate with Annabell Ramirez! Annabell completed our last yoga teacher training and extended Softer Side training with focus on the gentler styles of yoga - such as yin! She quickly fell in love with the practice and is excited to share it with the community. The perks of community classes are that they are free for the public to join in, but also because it gives our newer instructors an opportunity to practice teaching and build their teaching voice! We all start somewhere so we are grateful for all that come to show love and support for our growing instructors at Elevate. How awesome that you get to be a part of the beginning of their teaching journey!

Yin is a slower, more meditative style with focus on releasing the body into deep stretches and holds with the use of props. This practice emphasizes letting go so that the body can melt beyond the muscles and release deeply into the connective tissues throughout the body. It is available to all levels of practitioners - yes, beginners too! Come enjoy this 75 minute class and help support the growth of our teachers and community!

Elevate Book Club: Many Lives, Many Masters

About the meetup: We welcome you all to join a soulful discussion about books and spirituality. Each meetup will have a guided discussion about a different book. If you don't read the book or don't finish, we still encourage you to come. As these are spiritually themed books, it will be easy to join the discussion. We love to have a lot of different perspectives and encourage you to share (even if you didn't like the book!). We will summarize parts of the book, read quotes from it, and offer questions based on ideas, characters, themes, etc. We also welcome you to bring your own questions, favorite quotes, or anything else that spoke to you.

About Many Lives, Many Masters: in the 1980's, Brian Weiss was leading a successful and well-respected psychology practice. He was trained at Columbia and Yale and was considered one of the best in his field. When a patient came to him with chronic anxiety and depression he felt he could easily treat her. However, after a year and a half, they'd made no progress. He had no answers for why as he'd done everything he'd been trained to. He finally put her under hypnosis, and then EVERYTHING changed. She began spontaneously recounting past lives in vivid detail. Dr. Weiss was at first skeptical, thinking she may be having a psychotic break. But when her anxiety and depression cured themselves after the sessions he began to question everything he knew. As their story unfolds it gets even more remarkable. When the book was published it sold millions of copies and changed the way people thought about healing and mental health.

In case you’re interested, here’s a guided meditation you can try by the author. Would love to hear your feedback! https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqyvhVzLx4mqiNd1BcdoHCs6zhz7ig?e=LZMPXl

30 Day Meditation Challenge

to Dec 10

30 Day Meditation Challenge

Challenge is from November 11th-December 10th 2019

Have you been wanting to build a consistent home meditation practice? Or maybe you already have one and just want to practice with the community! We have created this 30 Day Meditation Challenge to get more people to enjoy the power of this magical practice - no matter your experience level! Meditating a little bit every single day can make a huge difference in our lives and we want you to be able to experience those differences first hand! Meditate with us daily during a time of year when life gets busy and oftentimes stressful. It can be easy to get caught up in all the movement of life while neglecting our own personal needs. If you're reading this now, you can MAKE time for a practice that can ultimately change your life. We can't wait to share it with you!

This challenge will be taking place on Facebook through our private Facebook group: Practice with Elevate (click link to join group). We have used this platform for prior challenges, but this is the first time the focus will be on Meditation. Okay, here's the part where we get you way out of your comfort zone. Each participant will post a Facebook LIVE video sitting for their practice every single day of this challenge. If you aren't familiar with Facebook LIVE, it is a video that records and previews instantly to our group so we see when you start, the full practice, and when you finish. This part is important for us to ensure each person is meditating each day and for how long. Remember, we must be able to see that it is YOU!

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

First, you must decide your goals for this challenge. This can be tailored to fit your specific needs.

What time of day? Choose a general time of day that you are committing to practicing daily. Morning, afternoon or evening. We recommend first thing in the morning to jumpstart your day, but anytime you can practice consistently works just fine.

For how long? Choose a length of time you'd like to practice each day. When choosing a time, pick a length that will challenge you yet inspire you to overcome. For beginners, we recommend 5-10 minutes daily. For those that have been practicing for a while, we recommend 15-20+ minutes daily.

We are asking you to commit to a specific time of day and length of time to hold you accountable in your practice. Consistency is key, and we want meditation to become a regular practice for you even after this challenge is over. Choose days and lengths of time that are reasonable & sustainable.

If you don't want to follow through with your exact day/time commitments, do what works best for you. These are here to help you with building a consistent routine in your practice, but can also be enjoyed daily without these commitments. Feel free to join us for this challenge either way!

Posting with Facebook LIVE

Facebook LIVE is just that... LIVE in the moment. Make sure your video camera is facing you and that we can clearly see you. Once you've completed your practice, you can end the video and BE SURE TO POST IT TO THE GROUP. We will check the full length of your video after it's been posted to see exact start/end times and to indicate the length of your practice. If you do not post it afterwards, it will not show up or be accounted for. We apologize if technology isn't your thing - we are giving you plenty of time to play with it or to reach out for help prior to the challenge.

You need an active Facebook account and ability to go LIVE from whatever device you are using to record your practice. You do not need phone storage to do this. By going live, it uploads to Facebook rather than your phone. If you use your phone to go LIVE, be sure that you are able to track your time or play music (if desired) from another device.

POINT SYSTEM

After each day, we will give points to each participant who shared & posted their practice with us via Facebook LIVE. You will be able to earn 1-3 points every single day depending on your practice.

  • 1 point will be issued if you post your daily meditation practice to the group (regardless of length of time/time of day)

  • 1 point will be issued if you practiced 15 or more minutes

  • 1 point will be issued if you met your length of time/time of day goal (you must have met them both to receive the point)

You do not receive extra points for multiple practices in one day. 3 points is the maximum point total that can be received each day - 90 points is the grand total that can be earned throughout this entire challenge.

Points can not be made up

FREE OR RAFFLE PRIZE ENTRY

You will have the choice during this challenge to enter for free or for $5 which enters you into our raffle. However many points you earn throughout the challenge will be the amount of entries you receive towards our raffle prizes. Only 3 winners will be chosen to receive a raffle prize - the true winning is a daily meditation practice.

If you want to participate for free, just join our Facebook group and play along! This is really what it's all about for us - people coming together to meditate!

WINNERS

Once the challenge is completed on December 10th by 11:59pm, we will announce the raffle winners the following day! We have 3 prizes currently, but who knows what other goodies we will have to share when the time comes?!

HOW DO I PRACTICE AT HOME?

Here are a few helpful reminders for building your practice at home:

  • Find a "quiet" place to sit

  • Find a comfortable seat

  • Play music or a guided meditation (optional)

  • Set a timer

  • Breathe

  • Don't forget to record for the challenge

LIVE CLASS - Q&A

Kaycie will be streaming a LIVE Facebook video to the group Saturday November 9th at 11am where she will go over the details of how to build your home practice. This will cover information like how to find a comfortable seated position, common discomforts felt in the body while sitting and how to support it for sustainable practice, making time for ourselves, how to create space in your home for meditation, types of guided meditations available, learning to be okay with having thoughts, dealing with distractions, suggested timers, music, rituals and any other details that come up. This LIVE class is free and will be open for you to ask questions throughout - Q&A style. Your questions can also be helpful to others, so we encourage you to engage!

If you can't tune in for the LIVE class, it will be uploaded to the group afterwards for you to watch at your convenience. If you have further questions after watching the video, comment on the video with your questions and Kaycie will respond to them promptly.

Tea Meditation Event

This event will focus on the grounding nature of tea and meditation and the powerful experience they create together. Kaycie will be guiding you through a meditation with pauses throughout to reflect and enjoy tea together. She will be practicing a tea ceremony inspired by the Chinese tradition of Gong Fu Cha. You don't need to know anything about tea or meditation to be a part of this event - it is open to all and will break down the process while also leaving room for the mind to create its own experience.

This is an intimate practice and is best enjoyed with a smaller group. We have opened/limited this event to 14 people. We will be sipping on an earthing pu'erh tea (2 pours are included) and allowing the resonation to awaken the mind and spirit through meditation.

All tea, cups and props needed for sitting will be provided for you (with the exception being if you need an actual chair - please bring it with you). This practice will be done on the floor. Wear comfortable clothing and bring an open mind. This may not be your typical way of drinking tea - it will be poured with intention and a deep sense of mindfulness. Slow down, enjoy.

We are proud to be serving WAO (We Are One) tea - an ethically sustainable tea company that comes directly from China/Japan - where the tea plant grows naturally. It is not overproduced, but created to be enjoyed and shared intimately. The tea poured for you at this event will also be available for you to purchase after our session together. We are proud to be partnering with such an intentional tea company.

Elevate Book Club: Siddhartha

Throughout history, books have played an integral role in sharing spiritual knowledge and bringing people together. Many people have had profound and life-changing experiences after stumbling upon a book that touched their soul. Through books, we are able to travel the world and open our minds and hearts to many different perspectives.

In this book club, we are going to explore some intriguing topics through a variety of popular books. The discussion is open to everyone and all thoughts and perspectives are welcome. We would love to hear what parts of a book spoke to you, what you liked, and what wasn't for you.

If you love to hear different ideas, but you're not comfortable sharing in a group, come anyway! This is first and foremost a chance to connect with others. We are here to support you wherever you're at. Also, if you started the book but didn't finish, we would still love to have you.

If you would like to sip on tea during the meeting, please bring a mug! We will have a kettle and a selection of teas on hand. You are also welcome to bring your own tea or some snacks for sharing. This is a free event and the meeting will last about an hour.

About the book: Siddhartha

Published in 1922, Siddhartha has captivated generations of people who have sought a deeper understanding of life. It is the story of a young man who leaves behind the life his family and society expect him to live in order to find his own sense of happiness and understanding. His journey brings him to many unique people who teach him different things, including the Buddha himself. The book explores themes of teacher and student, social expectations, friendship, and enlightenment.

Pop Up Yin Class: Long Holds with Sharon Taporco

Yin is a slower, more gentle style of yoga that works on opening the body and mind. Poses are done on the ground in seated or reclined positions and focused on longer deeper holds. Unlike other practices that focus on strengthening, heat building, and activation of the muscles, yin’s objective is to deactivate and to allow ourselves to release deeper into the connective tissues throughout the body. Poses are focused on passive release with the use of props for support and are typically held for 3-5 minutes each. After a few minutes of holding these poses, the body begins to find more release while helping to open and strengthen the joints. For those that have a hard time being still, this is a great mental practice. It may seem slow and gentle, but yin still offers a challenge of seeking our physical, mental, and emotional edges. There is great strength in surrender.

In this class, some postures may be held for longer than our typical Yin classes - come ready to let go!

Elevate Adventure: Hike & Yoga - Alamere Falls

Elevate Adventure: Hike & Yoga - Alamere Falls

Time for our next Elevate adventure and we are taking it to Point Reyes National Seashore for a beautiful coastal hike to Alamere Falls! This is a 8.8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail rated as moderate in difficulty, so we ask that you please feel comfortable hiking this distance/difficulty level. Each student is asked to bring their own food, water and any other items you may need or want. We have a list below with suggestions on what you may want to remember.

It takes about 3 hours to drive to Alamere Falls from Elevate (where we will all meet in the morning) so we are aiming to leave around 6am to get to the trailhead by 9am and ready to hike in (bathrooms are available at the start of trailhead). Timing can be tricky so make sure you have the full day available - We are aiming to leave the trailhead start by 2-3ish pm to drive home but could be earlier or later depending on how everything pans out. If we are still wanting to hang out after the hike, we can also arrange to go have lunch together nearby so long as all members in the vehicle are willing - please be considerate of other people's time - we can figure this out ahead of time as well. We will figure out carpooling prior to the adventure so please let us know if you plan on driving or are interested in driving and how many seats are available in your vehicle. It is greatly appreciated. If you are not driving, please take in to account gas money to help the drivers out - this is NOT included in your ticket donation.

After arriving to the falls/beach, we will enjoy a 60 minute yoga class led by Kaycie Hall. This will be a slow flow class with a long led meditation at the end to take in all the beauty and vastness of this place. It will not be too intense or vigorous - think about light and easy movements to cultivate energy and awareness. Afterwards we will have time to hang out, explore, play or sit and enjoy the scenery before heading back.

Ashley Garcia will also be joining us to take pictures along our adventure! We are so excited to have her capture these moments so we can share them and help to promote future Elevate adventures as well! We appreciate your presence and support of the growth of this community!

Disclaimer: We are not tour/nature/outdoor guides but we do promote getting outside and enjoying Mama Nature. We are inviting you to join us at your own risk and liability. We are not responsible for any mishaps, accidents or injuries that may occur on this adventure and by purchasing your ticket, you are agreeing to this release of any liability of Elevate Community Yoga and any of our staff present. Stay safe and have fun - we simply want to share these fun adventures with you.

Things to bring:

  • Water (this is a longer hike and temperatures could be quite warm, so bring enough to last you through the day)

  • Food (think any snacks, lunch and possibly even early dinner to properly sustain you for all activities - fruits are great for hydration as well)

  • Layers (sometimes it can be hot - sometimes the coastal breeze can make it quite chilly so be prepared for all elements)

  • Hiking shoes (whether you bring boots or hiking sandals - make sure they are comfortable, grippy, and broken in)

  • Yoga Mat (completely optional - we will be doing yoga on the beach so it's not necessary to have a mat. You can practice right in the sand OR a beach towel if you bring one. Yoga will be light and emphasis will be on meditation & slow flow)

  • Sunblock

  • Hat to block sun (optional)

  • Beach Towel (optional)

  • Beach blanket (optional)

  • Hiking Backpack (recommended to carry your belongings)

  • Money for gas and possible lunch afterwards

  • If you think of anything else that we may be forgetting, please let us know!

We are super looking forward to the fun we will have on this adventure! Please sign up to let us know you're coming and we will start to arrange carpooling as the date gets closer! Thank you for your continued support!

Suggested Donation: $15/person, $10/members OR $25 for 2 people

Pop Up Gentle Core Yoga Class with Ann Lewis

Pop Up Gentle Core Yoga Class with Ann Lewis

Yoga is for every type of body, but not every type of yoga is right for everyone. A gentle yoga practice offers the time and opportunity to stretch, strengthen, relax and renew. We will focus on increasing flexibility, balance, and core strength. This type of yoga is called Gentle because a minimal amount of pressure is applied to wrists, shoulders and knees, making it accessible to many people. However, this does not mean the class is easy! A good deal of the class is done either seated or stretched out on the yoga mat, and by staying on our backs, we are able to support our spines and work our core muscles deeply and efficiently. Be prepared to sweat!

Gentle Core would be appropriate for beginners, seniors, someone recovering from an injury, as a compliment to a vinyasa practice and everyone in between!

This counts as a regular class: Drop in $13, Class Packages: counts as 1 class, Members: free

Slow down and focus on intentional movement and breath. This class emphasizes more of the alignment and slow mindful movements versus flowing one breath one motion like vinyasa. This practice can still offer a challenge and build internal heat but with a slower and more conscious approach. Did we mention little to no chaturangas?!

Tayoga, Beer & Pretzels

If you love craft beer and yoga, this is the event for you! Two free beers will be provided for your enjoyment: the first has been well-loved by Tayoga for years, and served as inspiration for the second, which Tayoga brewed herself for this event (with the help of professionals, of course). The beer won’t be the only thing flowing at this event - yogis will be flowing through a fun yoga sequence, taking breaks as needed to sip on a brewsky or munch on some pretzels. Let the beer relax the body so you can flow with ease; who knows, by the end, maybe you will be able to bend into a pretzel yourself! See you there! Cheers and Namas(tay)!

With: Taylor Huff, RD, RYT 200

We recommend showing up early to get your first pour!

In Advance: $25 Donation. Members: $20
